It’s the only alternative energy play I actually hold. It sells about 3 cents / share, and has an energy concept that will work without subsidies. (They make machinery to turn algae into diesel fuel.)

Have you ever wondered why the result of your stock market trading efforts have been miniscule, and far below set target in spite of all positive signal generated from our stock analysis indices? It’s what a company is doing presently that reflects in her quarterly and audited end of year result. The saying goes: “What you are today is the product of your decision yesterday”. Conversely, what you will be tomorrow is also a product of your decision today. This is a statement of truth that also applies to the stock trading business.

There are basically two ways to get inside information about a firm. First, do Search engine research for all current news about the firm we intend adding to our Portfolio in the press, look out for issues pertaining to new contract signed or revoked, creditors rating of the firm, litigation and etc. The second approach is to visit the firm, listen to conversation at the reception, pick the brain of the workers. Ask questions. Is the company retrenching? Watch out for new renovation works in progress, new fleet of cars and equipment purchased. Is the firm introducing new products? Are the Employees happy and motivated? Answers to these questions can give us a clue as to the direction the company is going. The result of such visit could be quite revealing and it will help to confirm our decision to invest in that organization or not.

But, before you ask me why all these? My simple answer to that question is a big “YES”.The additional effort you put for such investigation can not be compared to the attendant consequences of a failed investment. To buttress my argument, hear this: There was a firm that was once listed in the stock exchange and was doing well in the market.

Every day people bought and sold this shares. But a day came, an intelligent investor visited the company and discovered to his chagrin, that the company’s gate was under lock with over grown weeds for the past few months. Before the regulators got to know about it, many of the investors have suffered various degree of losses. It’s what a firm does now that finds expression in her end of year financial report. Be a smart investor and do your stock investing wisely.

What the heck is the ‘underlying product’ at a specific price, and future date am I agreeing to buy or sell when I trade Stock Index Futures. I figure a E-mini Futures Contract for a commodity such as corn or soy beans derives it’s value from the ‘underlying product” the commodity itself hence the contract is a derivative. So my question is …On what asset, is a flipping statistic such as a ‘stock index’ based. I need to be enlightened Thanks?

If you don’t know then you shouldn’t be doing it. The commonly traded indexes are the Dow Jones Industrials, a basket of thirty companies, and the Standard & Poors 500, which last I saw was only 498 as they had to drop a couple and with this market flux hadn’t announced (or figured out) the replacements.

You can do the same with some ETFs called DIA and SPY. To hedge your bets in the indexes, may I suggest you buy the ETFs as a store of value should you go too close to the wire on the futures and be called to deliver. The ETFs will hold those stocks and their relative value (NAV) so you sell the ETFs, buy the component stocks, and then you can deliver if called for.

Better yet, just buy the ETFs and leave the leveraged stuff alone until you are more ready.

Stock Market Education For A Beginner

If you‘re just learning about the stock market things can seem daunting. Stock market education for the beginner is saturated with a wealth of products and information that you have to digest even before you start trading. For most day traders it takes years of studying to become a better than average day trader.

How about if you want to bypass this, is there a way of doing it?

Yes.

Of course it means you need to have enough money to afford a brokerage firm that will be able to fully manage your investments. This is great because you can leave everything up to them. On the downside trust can come at a price. You see what people are not taught in stock market education for a beginner is that brokerage firms are paid by the amount of trades they make. Like an agent with multiple clients it’s no good to them if you’re stock portfolio is stagnant.

Of course there is no guarantee even the best brokerage firm will make you a profit about the basic rate of bank interest.

So you want to learn the market on your own and cut out the broker? Stock market education for a beginner should start with taking a look around the internet, or even at some of my articles. There are great sources out there. I started by reading ‘The Warren Buffett Way’ and my interest soared form there.

I haven’t heard of any schools like that. Your Chicago Public School system should have Adult Education classes in all types of subjects including investing. I attended some of those classes to see how they were taught, and found them very good for newbies. Usually taught by brokers/money managers/financial advisers, they gave good general information. Since every student has different needs and risk tolerance, for the “intense practical details” they will ask you to come to their office during business hours so they can sell you into setting up an account with them and go over your situation in detail.

I have a teacher who is more than a little ditzy. She tried to tell us that when looking at a stock sheet the “last” price is the price right before closing. I think it’s whatever that last trade sold at (hence, “last”). I’m not sure what she thinks “closing” price is. Just wanted to run this past everyone and make sure I’m not crazy.

I have over 200 stock sales in 2007 and I use Scottrade. When I download my stock information in Turbo Tax, it only shows the sales amount. That is I have to fill one by one sales price and date of purchase for each sale manually.

Is there a better way so that I can import all my stock trades directly in Turbo Tax with purchase or cost amount and sale amount?

Some one told me that I have to export a file from scottrade on my desktop and then import that file in to Turbo Tax. How is that done???

But I have seen a return where they do export form Scottrade and import to TurboTax and every thing is there. May be for this, we need to install some software on our laptop or desktop.

When you did the download, it only included the 1099-B data–which has *never* included your cost basis. I realize that if you bought/sold everything through one brokerage account that your statement included the information, but that’s not part of your 1099-B.

So…if you can’t figure out any other way, here’s what many people do. They download the sales into excel. They create columns that match the format of the D-1. They put in formulas to calculate the gain/loss “=(d1-e1)” and total for proceeds and gains “=sum(e1:e200)”. They type in column headers and write “SCHEDULE D-1,” their name and SSN and then send this to the IRS instead of retyping everything into TT.

On the real schedule D, they put see attached and copy over the totals to line 2 and line 9.

No matter how many times you’ll ask this question, there are still no grants for this type of activity

You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business — THERE’S NONE.

Direct Payment Plan

If you have already identified the company you want to invest in, then the direct payment plan is the most cost effective method. There are many popular companies like Walt Disney that offer this option for interested investors.

Keep in mind that each company will have different policies on the direct payment plan. You will either be permitted to apply online or be required to fill in documents or be asked to invest in a minimum amount. Some companies waive the minimum amount on the condition that your bank account will be automatically debited every month.

Although a broker is not involved in a direct payment plan, your investment will be handled by a transfer agent. You are usually informed of the amount of shares and the time of purchase according to company rules. The transfer agent may or may not charge a fee for his services.

Now you know how to purchase stocks without a broker, but that does not mean that you have escaped the equivalent of the broker’s commissions. This way, you can purchase fractions of shares each time payment is made. In time, you would have accumulated bundles of shares with your small payment increments and, hence, build up on your wealth. You actually have the benefit of dollar-cost averaging.

There are also brokerage companies like Charles Schwab and TD Ameritrade that provide for online direct stock investments services. You will be charged fees for most transactions. However, you have the benefit of buying and selling stocks on your own instead of going through the brokers. This way, you save on the hefty commissions.

You can also buy a single share of stock from specialized services like One Share. Said share usually comes in a frame, which makes for a great gift. Beyond its gift-giving aspect, this is one way to enroll in a dividend reinvestment plan. Enrollment takes just a few minutes. ETFC and IBKR are the 2 US online brokers that allow you to trade directly in overseas markets …

Some of the big full service brokers allow this but if you had that kind of money you’d already know that.

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/mostrequesteditems/CON_FAQ2.html

“The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments.”

Earning from the stock market is definitely not one type of activity that will get you grants
